prairie dogs
those cute, little, furry, love-to-watch, endangered creatures may have their own day. city council still wants to make ground hog day in santa fe, "prairie dog day," with the same seeing the shadow scenario. the only problem i see is that the phenomenon started in pennsylvania, with a large german population, from german folklore. there aren't too many germans living here now or ever. culture clash. i don't know too many heinrich gonzales'.
scientists have discovered that prairie dogs have their own primitive language. it goes something like this, "tall human, yellow shirt," "danger! dog that direction!" "fat human, red shirt." i'm not sure how long it took to figure that out. i just think it's great to watch them go about their business.

the best prairie dog watching area in town was taken away by big development. it was on galisteo, by the hospital. there would always be traffic at the stop sign and you had nothing better to do than to watch the prairies dogs out in the not-so-vacant lot. every time they develop land where prairie dogs have made a home, state law requires relocation instead of poison because prairie dogs are endangered. they don't just put notices on their holes; they use a giant vacuum the size of a garbage truck and suck everything out of the holes, prairie dogs and all, and relocate them outside of town. the best place to watch them after that was on pacheco by the pella window/bank of albuquerque area/kinko's of the smith's shopping center, but they got all sucked away too. there are other locations in town to watch them, like between the high school and the library on llano st.
prairie dogs rule!
